 Dark is Rising-Reviews (Spoilers)
« Thread Started on Oct 19, 2007, 9:10pm »

Well it's out in the UK today, and Asi asked me to draw up a review thread!

There obviously will be spoilers, so those who do not want to know what happens, please do not look any further!

I'll post my review later, once I get everything sorted!

Well I have just seen this film in what will be the last showing of it in Worcester. It was a monumental moment. I even forked out for premium seats.

I must say I was slightly surprised by this film. I had expected a Harry Potter style jolly jaunt through the mystic rather than a dark thriller, and yet it worked so well. I was impressed by the clever directing and camera work, and liked how they seemed to rely on this and very atmospheric music rather than expensive special effects. I felt the strobe lighting and crazy camera angles worked very well.

There were a few moments where they missed the mark slightly, though you sould see what they were trying to do. The moment that jumps forefront to my mind was when Will Stanton was stood at the bus stop surrounded by crows. Obviously the idea was to build the tension and then the bus arriving would make the audience jump. It didn't, but good try.

I think Chris probably got the best character of the lot. It looked utterly amazing the first time you see him comming out the woods on his horse, and I felt that was the moment that really defined this film and showed you what it was going to be. Up until that point it had been oh so domestic and then the Rider appears dark and very very dangerous. I was taken by surprise by the use of the doctor (and how we laughed at that), seeming so nice and jolly and yet underneath was this evil creature.

The rest of the cast were amaizng as well. I don't think there was a single weak link among them and hats off to Alexander Ludwig and Emma Lockhart who acted their socks off and at such a young age. They say never work with children and never work with animals, yet they did both and it payed off well.

I have to admit, I have never read this book and therefore feel unqualified to try and make a comparison, but I have to say, this film is excellent. Definitly worth a watch if it is still showing near you.

I've been reading around, and it seems everyone hated this film and only went for Chris. ANd yet it has risen 165% on the IMDB charts. Personally I loved it. Having not read the book, I was not constantly comparing it, and so could sit back and enjoy. As fantasy films go, it was awesome! Am I the only who enjoyed it?

I actually have wanted to see it from the trailers, and wasn't aware Chris was in it for the longest time...but haven't had a chance to yet. :/ I'm a little iffy on the weird amalgam of special powers, but I'm hoping it's premise will outweigh what ever silliness having a teen hero is prone toward.

Yeh it is well worth a watch. Chris had perhaps the best role in it. After all the slagging off I heard of this film I went in with quite low expectations, and was really pleasantly surprised. The trailers do capture the excitement and pace of the movie. Go see it!

Have to say I thought the same, it wasnt as bad at it was painted, not by a long way, I`ve seen some doozers in me time, and this wasnt one of em, perhaps more a case of missed opportunities

I think the only thing that did really annoy me was the horse, well not the horse exactly more the overuse and the way he was used at times, did leave me wondering if it was used to fill up gaps in footage they didnt have.

I havent a clue about the books, so it was new to me, there were brilliant bits and thought yes, theyve really got something here, but then it sort of tailed off, maybe it was all those partial re writes everyone kept saying it had had.

When the globe rolled down the stairs, I thought for a split second he was going to say Rosebud LOL

Yes, it seemed to me that some of the horse shots were for artistic value, and they felt a little at odds with the rest of the film. You had this pretty quick paced film, and then in the middle, weird camera angles of horses hoves. However, I appreciate good cinematography, and it was pretty clever.

And as before I mentioned, there were a few points where you could see what they were trying to achieve and they just missed the mark al little. But it was certainly not a dunse, and I will be buying it when it comes out. And I don't know if you know this, but I refuse to buy films just because Chris is in them. If they are on TV I will watch them, possibly even tape them, but unless it appeals to me as a film as well, it does not enter my dvd collection. This one will. Waaaaaaaaaaaay better than Harry Potter.

I think that what it really needs is less horse and more Rider, Pinewood may have some spare space going begging, soooo I`m sure we could manage to cobble together produce something suitable between us, I`ll have a go with the camera, Asi could do scripts, scrounge some money off Gina, what was the name of the bloke who played the Rider again?

My friend is a making a movie at the moment, and they need someone to do a Voice Over for them, and they have very limited budget. It's for a youth group thing, and I'm like 'ask Chris ask Chris!'. There may also have been a small 'and please invite me onto set that day...'
