Breaking News: G.I. Joe's Destro Has Been Re-Cast!
« Thread Started on Feb 12, 2008, 8:38am »

The IESB has received breaking news, a last minute change has been
made to the G.I. Joe cast - Who to play Destro.

A devastating blow has been dealt to David Murray, the actor set to
star as Destro in the new G.I. Joe film.
Seems he had unforeseen problems getting into the United States and
wasn't able to get a work VISA in time for the film's start date of
Wednesday February 13th.

Studio sources say Murray is a phenomenal actor with a great body of
work and are disheartened that he was unable to get his immigration issues
in order before the film was set to start shooting.

Well, although the higher ups were dismayed that Murray would not be
able to play the role, what's a studio to do other than re-cast? Paramount
Pictures has confirmed, the actor will no longer be in the film, instead
they have given the role of Destro to Chris Eccleston.

Eccleston, a British actor, is most known for his stint as Dr. Who for
one season and his role as Claude aka The Invisible Man on the hit NBC TV
series Heroes. He also had a villainous role in Fox/Walden's The Seeker as
the Rider.

Stay tuned to the IESB, your unofficial G.I. Joe Headquarters!

Blimey that came out of the left field! Not exactly top of the list for something I would have chalked him down for being interested in.

Wahoo does that mean the writers strike is sorted then? Hadnt heard anything if they have a start date then looks like it is.

edit: Just had a hunt around see who the director is... ROFL erm you know how Chris isnt all that enamoured of cgi? erm lets put it this way I`d stock up on industrial strength ear plugs if I were you. cos this director is well quite fond of them, quote from IMDB:

Industrial Light & Magic jokingly created the "Stephen Sommers Scale" to measure the extent of digital effects used in a given movie scene. The four parts of the scale, from lowest to highest, are "What The Shot Needs", "What The Computers Can Handle", "Oh My God, The Computers Are About To Crash", and finally "What Stephen Wants".

Goodness this is great news. Well Chris did play a soldier in 28 days later... but still an unusual role for him I think.

It doesn't seem to be the sort of thing he would do. I'll keep an eye on this film to see how it turns out. But I have the feeling that his starring in the show, is the same as him starring in the Prisoner. We'll see though.

Okay I erm coughs used to play with GI. Joe figures as a kid and Destro is the bad guy. I just looked him up again and the figure has a silver face. Wonder who is playing snake eyes.

Thing is Destro has a mask so I don't know if we'll even see Chris' face in the movie. All depends what they do with the mask.

Another report says they began filming yesterday (11th Feb) & afaik the news has been confirmed.

Here's more:
It seems that reports of somewhat-unknown David Murray getting cast as Destro came a bit too early. After initially making a deal, he had to pull out due to visa issues. According to IESB (and later confirmed by Hollywood Reporter), Paramount has instead cast Christopher Eccleston ("Dr. Who", 28 Days Later) as the main villain in the upcoming adaptation of G.I Joe.

He will be starring alongside Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Said Taghmaoui, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Arnold Vosloo. Director Stephen Sommers is leading the project, which began production yesterday, based on a screenplay by Stuart Beattie.

Plot Summary: The movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago.
The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force.
This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not
be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I Joe will hit theaters Aug. 7, 2009.
