Outside the gleaming glass building twilight was setting. In the distance the Californian sea glittered with the insouciant sunlight, casting a delicate haze across the sky, and a pleasant orange glow to everything.
The protesters saw to their bloodied noses on the steps and grass verges, hugging each other in pride at their fortitude as the 'heroic' students filed from the building before him, defeated, deflated and dethroned from their mighty positions by a small ginger boy who knew what it was like to be lonely.
Another lonely boy, all grown up now, leant against a car and watched the chaos calm itself. His face was painted with pride and achievement, and hope...that she would come for him, perhaps forgive the insanity that had grown up about him that day. It seemed to follow him, like a curse, then again, if followed her too. And neither of them thought this a tragedy. Both looked forward to the adventure. They were so different, but that was what bound them together in the end, he thought, the hunger for something greater than power, the hunger for adventure.
The little blond figure bounded out from a broken window (of course, he thought, really cool people don't use doors...). Her old eyes cast about the crowd with such a similar expression: hope, pride, excitement for the next big thing. But of course she was looking for a face that could not be there, a face that (as far as these poor creatures knew) was lying dead in the office building above. He was dead, he could not wander amongst them, and so he had chosen a face he knew she would find amongst the crowd.
A short haired, hard worn face. With piercing blue eyes and short cropped hair. A wide smile. A leather jacket, reminiscent of a U-boat captain. He grinned, and waved.
It was sick, a little, but perfect. The Doctor waved at her old self and winked.
"Nice look." She said, wading over with the kind of swagger she saved for when she was really impressed.
"Thought you'd like." Sylar joked. "So where to?" He asked.
"Everywhere." The Doctor smiled.
And so with a click of his fingers he and the delightful creature vanished, as the sun sank into the distant ocean. The TARDIS beckoned, and nothing, this time, would hold them back.
The End
