Okay I thought I'd write a new ending for this (sorry Mr Hardy) so here goes......
The children die, Sue does her 'It's God's punishment' bit and leaves Jude as normal. Then a mysterious stranger approaches Sue whilst she's at church and tells her 'No it's not if God has anything to do with it at all then it's a test.' Because y'know they had so much grief and condemnation from people for being together that maybe God, knowing the children would die anyway (as they so often did back then) decided to use that to see if they could tough it out and stand up for what they believe in. Anway Sue takes some convincing but there's just something about this kindly stranger she finds comforting. Eventually she stops being so silly and goes back to Jude where they have a lifetime of pain and misery but at least it's pain and misery together.

I watched Jude for the first time today, and maybe if it had ended like that I wouldn't have cried for the rest of the afternoon

LOL I was half tempted to have someone shake Sue soundly and say 'Actually the children died because you were dumb enough to leave them on their own at such a young age. God had nothing to do with it.'
Seriously in this day and age Jude and Sue wouldn't have been able to be together either because they'd be up on charges of criminal neglect, possibly facing jail sentences.

I read the book and I haven't seen the movie yet but the book made me cry my eyes out. I just kept playing The Beatles-Hey Jude, over and over again. *sob*

i thought it matched quite well personally. "You were made to go out and get her. The minute you let her under your skin, then you can begin to make it better."

That and the song was actually written by Paul Mcartney about John Lennon's son Julian Lennon. Sorry to burst your bubble.
