The Doctor grabbed her arm roughly, as she stepped out from behind the bush that they had been following.
“Ow! What was that for?”
“That there, is who we are following, and if we make ourselves known we could change the entire history of mankind. And we wouldn’t want that now would we?”
Rose gave him a slight quizzical look, complete with raised eyebrows and death glare.
“Since when did you take the softly softly approach?” she asked, suspicion mounting.
The Doctor sighed, releasing her arm and stuffing his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket.
“Since him over there is a pivotal part of human history.”
She frowned. “but he looks about twelve.”
“17 actually, and off to university is twelve months.”
“So why are we here?”
“There’s a bounty on his head. If he dies… well that’s not really worth thinking about.” He flashed her his trade mark grin. “We need to keep him safe. The best way to do that is…”
“To act as his own personal body guards. Got it.”
His smile grew if that was possible. Rose of course, was always on the ball.
“So again, who is he? Why does, whoever they are, ant him dead? And why are you so desperate to save him”
“Cause that boy there, will grow up to be one of humanities unsung heroes. He finds a connection between the way all bacteria and viruses grow. Once that connection was made, he set about wiping out all earthly illness. Massive pharmaceutical companies wanted him. Offered him any amount of money. Do you know what he did?”
“No.”
“He turned them down, and did his charity solely funded by charity. Once complete he gave is research away. It meant the cure was available to everyone. Not just the rich and the powerful. But everyone could get their hands on it. And what’s more, he didn’t try and cheat by forcing people to keep using the drugs. One tablet and that was it, immune. Because of him, humans lasted longer, space travel became a necessity due to over population. It forced mankind into a new golden era!” the Doctor was becoming more and more animated. Rose shushed him, slightly worried that they might be spotted.
“So you like this guy then?”
The Doctor nodded.
“And here I thought Charles Dickens was your hero.” She nudged him in the ribs and they both laughed.
“He is, and so is he. I also like Einstein, for obvious reasons, and Ant and Dec.”
On her look he added, “causes you just want to poke them and feed them peanuts.”
“Doctor, you ever thought that meeting you was what made him go into science?”
The Doctor didn’t reply.
“That it was you who inspired him?”
The Doctor shook his head. Rose entwined her fingers with his.
“I know you Doctor. You’re not worried about changing the time line. You never are. You’re just shy about meeting your hero.”
She gave him another nudge. His look told her she was right.
“Come on. Let’s go meet boy wonder.”
With that she dragged him out from behind the bush and started to chase the bot down the street. With a slight hesitation the Doctor followed. Grinning from ear to ear.
