ok, this is more daydream than dream so any chance of stretching the rules just a tad? ;D
The only light came from the fire flickering fitfully in the grate, a highbacked leather chair stood at its side. The doctor sat slouched with his head leaning against one of the chairs wings ,eyes fixed on the flames, the sounds of the day echoed through his thoughts “don’t you dare make this place domestic” his gaze moved to the hearth reflected light blinking from the companion set “I don’t do families”. He shifted in his chair glancing over to a small bookcase on the far wall, he sighed and stood up, then suddenly moved towards the bookcase, took hold of an ornate box sitting on one of the shelves, going back to his chair he sat down, balancing the box on his knee he opened the lid. The box held a jumble of items, he fingered them sadly then took hold of a key, turning it over between his fingers ,his mind wandered off into the past…
He was standing in a bright sunny kitchen, music seemed to be all around him, the smell of cooking filled the air. Suddenly the door opened, a tall man walked in grinned inanely at him, and crouched down infront of him
“Ok junior what have you done this time?” the man laughed
“and forget that look, even your mothers almost immune to it..me I invented it!”
“no confession?” he pulled a comic angry face
“ok, lets ask Mum”
“I`m sorry…I din`t mean to…I`m sorry” sobs made the words almost unintelligable
His father ruffled his hair and laughed “come on..its not that bad..is it?” he asked looking up at the blond woman standing beside them, she looked up at the ceiling and laughed shaking her head.
Her face was blurred by his tears and he sniffed and rubbed his nose across the back of his hand. She picked him up and sat him on her knee , gave him a hug and very quietly said “just explain to your Dad what you did so he can work out what to do”
He sniffed “I wanted to change the chamelion circuit, so I …did…and you said never to test anything except with the remote incase…so I stood outside the tardis first..”
His father looked puzzled wiped the tears from his sons face “that’s good, you did what I told you”
he smiled then glanced at his wife who was trying not to laugh
“shall I tell Dad?”
he nodded his gaze fixed on the floor
“well, he had an idea for changing the chamelion circuit so it would automatically duplicate the background of wherever it was”
His father smiled “good idea…er did it work?”
His mother laughed “a bit too well..we can`t find it”
His father stared “you cant find it? I don’t understand..just get the key and it…”his voice tailed off as he stared at his wife who was desperately trying to keep a straight face “he left the key in the door”
He closed his eyes fighting back a laugh that was threatening to erupt
“oh dear”
shaking silently he added “I`ll go and borrow your uncles Tardis, soon have it sorted”
She smiled “told you it would be alright didn`t I?…oh no need for tears..”
He was crying again, this time great desperate sobs
“no it won`t, he`ll want Dad to go away again ..he`ll be gone a long time again..It`s all my fault”
She shushed him softly and and hugged him
“no he won`t, not again..I promise..never again”
He was alone again, head pressing against the back of the chair,he stared at the key put it back into the box closed the lid, balancing the box on the chair arm,his finger traced the edge of the lid absently “I don’t do familes” the words were echoing through his head again
