And then there were two ( be careful how you tinker with a TARDIS)
The Doctor`s tinkering with the chameleon circuit finally bears fruit
The Doctor pushed the inspection cover back with his foot, sighed happily and wiped is hands down the front of his jumper. "Well," he announced confidently, "If that doesn`t fix it -nothing will!"
The TARDIS hummed distantly, clearly not impressed. "Be like that then... I`m telling you its finally fixed, next time we land somewhere we`ll be invisible." Loud ticking nearly deafened him, the lighting suddenly painfully bright, the Doctor winced, "Okay, I didn`t mean invisible, I meant blend in... definitely blend in..." the ticking calmed down, and turned into a strident humming.
"Alright, I know... it went a bit wrong, but this time its fine... trust me."
What sounded like a single note from a bugle made the Doctor scowl, and march huffily off, out of the control room, "No pleasing some people," he grumbled loudly.
The TARDIS sighed, the main lights dimmed, leaving the indicator lights to flicker, fitfully, around the controls. Suddenly a shaft of blinding white light blazed by the doorway, colours whirled within it, spinning then slowly taking form, then it blinked and was gone- leaving only the faint sound of something clanking across the metal flooring in the darkness.
A voice began humming happily, the TARDIS joining in with quiet ticking, almost as if they were singing together.
* * *
The Doctor wandered into the control room, yawned then stopped, the lights hadn`t upped power as they usually did, and someone was moving around the centre console. "Rose?" he enquired, although quite why he should think it could be anyone else would be something he would look back on, and ponder.
The figure moved in the shadows, saying nothing, he knew it wasn`t Rose, he also knew-although he didn`t know why- that it represented no threat to them- but still....
He moved forward a few steps then stopped, "Any chance of some light?" he said loudly, and waited.
Almost reluctantly it seemed, the lights slowly brightened, and the figure gradually became visible. The Doctor didn`t move, waiting for her to acknowledge him-she didn`t.
He pursed his lips, and took a deep breath, forcing his voice to sound chatty and unbothered, he said, "Morning... sleep well?"
The woman looked vaguely over at him, her eyes seemed to look right through him at first, as if she didn`t see him, then she blinked and focussed on him.
There was something hypnotic about her eyes, he felt light-headed, as if he was floating through the air towards her, yet he knew he hadn`t moved at all.
She opened her mouth as if to say something, but garbled sounds were all he heard, then she shook her head and coughed, the lights flickered, and for a split second the console died, then she was walking towards him, smiling and holding out her hand.
She stopped and looked up at him, he looked down into a pair of huge green-tinted eyes that seemed to mesmerise him, he felt himself being drawn closer to her, she smiled, touched his cheek tenderly, and murmured, "My Doctor."
The Doctor`s lips formed words that never ended up being spoken, he pursed his lips and attempted to smile confidently back, but his eyes betrayed his uncertainty, almost as if she was sharing his feelings the woman took a few steps back, then looked down at the floor.
Relaxing slightly, he pushed his hands deep into his jacket pocket, and smiling gently at her asked quietly, "Do you have a name?"
She looked up at him, her eyes now seemed more blue than green, he peered into them, entranced by the way the colours changed, almost like....
He stared at her, his head slowly shook in disbelief, "You can`t be..." his eyebrows raised questioningly, "Your not..."
She smiled quietly back, her head tilted slightly to one side, he laughed, grabbed her hands in his, then looked down at them, his thumb rubbing across the back of her hand, "Oh! fantastic! just...." grinning widely, head shaking in delighted disbelief, he released her hands, cupped her chin in his hands, then kissed her positively full on the lips.
"Is this someone I should know?" enquired a voice coldly from behind them, he jumped, released her and turned to face Rose, who was standing glaring at him, arms folded tightly across her chest.
His joy at realising who the stranger was, was doomed to be short lived, the look on Rose`s face saw to that!
The Doctor grinned at her- there wasn`t really anything else he could do, "Rose," he announced, trying to sound as positive as he could, "this is... erm, " he paused, then started again, "This is the Tar... a," he looked apologetically at the woman, she gave him an amused look and shrugged, then smiled at Rose, who glared back (she clearly viewed this new arrival as competition, and that was one thing Rose never did respond well to).
The Doctor shuffled his feet, coughed and turned back towards Tara, " Well you know who she is," he mumbled vaguely and shrugged, "I really should try and do something about that... circuit," he added and dodged around her so he could get to the console.
Tara attempted to be friendly, but Rose was clearly having none of it, she didn`t know who the hell this Tara was, but she seemed to have some kind of history with her Doctor, and to her, that meant only one thing- time to repel boarders.
She glared back at the newcomer, arms still tightly folded across her chest, and enquired icily, "An old acquaintance I take it."
Tara blinked back, clearly the suggestion that her connection was somewhat tentative didn`t go down very well, the green of her eyes deepened slightly, and she said "Oh, we go back a long way."
Rose looked dismissively at her, "Travelled with him before then have you?"
Tara didn`t bother smiling any more, her eyes darkened yet again, " All the time."
Rose smirked, "He never mentioned you, and I`ve never seen you before, " she tapped her foot, impatiently waiting for an explanation, Tara shrugged and turned away.
Furious that she was being dismissed, Rose stormed towards her and grabbed Tara`s arm, attempting to turn her back towards her.
The Doctor just had time to yell, "No," and take a step towards them, the TARDIS screamed like a banshee, and lurched rapidly from side to side, as if she was trying to avoid something. Rose ended up on the floor, staring up into coal-black eyes, glaring down at her from a totally expressionless face, that seemed to glow with a faintly green aura.
Rose started to scream, she stared into Tara`s impossible eyes, it was as if they were growing larger by the minute, blocking out the light, and she was staring up into black nothingness, she felt dizzy, but she didn`t know if she was spinning around, because she no longer had any point of reference, just total blackness.
The Doctor`s voice seemed to float around, but she couldn`t tell what he was saying, she felt herself move to one side, then something hard hit the side of her head.
* * *
Rose blinked, the light dazzled her, she put up her hand to shield her eyes, a familiar voice asked, "You alright?" and the Doctor`s face grinned down at her.
Struggling to sit up, she rubbed the side of her head, and glanced at his retreating back, "Where`s Tara?"
The Doctor didn`t turn to face her, " Gone- for now," he murmured, vaguely.
Rose moved too quickly and winced, " What do you mean for now?" she yelled, struggling to her feet, "What the hell was she?"
"Is she," he corrected her.
"You mean she could some back?" Rose asked weakly.
"Maybe," he shrugged, still avoiding facing her.
"So... who is she then, this Tara of yours," Rose asked glaring at him.
The Doctor took a deep breath and faced her, "Tara," he announced impatiently, "Is what she`s always been-and always will be."
"Well goody for her," grumbled back Rose, "mind answering the question?"
"Oh for goodness sake Rose, Think for once... she`s the TARDIS," he shook his head, and glared at her.
Rose stared at him, "You mean I just fell out with..." she looked around nervously.
He smiled, "Wouldn`t worry if I were you... she doesn`t hold grudges."
Smiling, she leaned back against the guard rail, then jumped away as the metalwork crackled.
The Doctor laughed, "Don`t look so worried... just static."
Rose forced a smile, "Yeh, course," she murmured
The Doctor moved around the switches and dials, happily re-adjusting this setting and that, the TARDIS ticked contentedly as she always did, all seemed right in their world- except for Rose, who perched nervously on the edge of the bench seat, glancing behind her every now and then, clearly unconvinced that she had been forgiven so quickly.
Peering furtively over in her direction, he smirked, her nervousness amused him, seemed his TARDIS had decided to leave Rose in no doubt who ruled the roost!
