Found this on annother board, posted today(11th Jan),don`t know how accurate it is:
I have heard a different story recently about Christopher Eccleston: apparently he was signed up for a second series, but was concerned about the workload - not for himself, but for the rest of the crew - they were working 4 weeks with only 1 day off, and they were falling like flies.
He said that if they didn't fix the schedule he would not return for a second series. The BBC wouldn't give in to his demand, so recast the doctor (and saving a large amount in the budget too).
My source is one of the crew on the last series.
It does seem to add up to what we know, it explains why he stayed t`d off with them for so long, it fits with comments he made about backroom staff, the fact that he seemed to know what was coming in series2,and the radio2 programme when they kept saying how upset staff were about what was said and it not being true etc.etc. probably not all of it, but it could well be part.

sounds like the sort of thing he would do too. he seems to be the throw himself on the sword type, and i do prefer this rumour to the less nice ones. though he also said in the radio2 thing that he felt that the scripts were stale and that is the only time i have actually heard him make any comment about why he left. which in a away would indicate that he had seen the second series. but i dont think he could just walk out if he had signed on for a second series. maybe he was asked, and made some demands that the bbc didnt like (like changing the schedule) and when they wouldnt meet them refused to sign. pure speculation of course
